FIGO Meeting for Obginers
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Dear fellow medical students,

... for those who are working on research papers related to OB/GYN, please do think about applying your abstract, poster and video presentations *by February 15th *for the *FIGO World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics *(Cape Town, SAR - October 4-9 2009).*

Collaboration between FIGO and IFMSA was initiated during IFMSA MM 2007 in Mandurah, Australia when prof. I Fraser, a former IFMSA President came to our meeting as an alumni willing to contribute to the education of medical students in contraceptives (SCORA sessions). FIGO has after then, *for the first time in history*, opened the possiblity for medical students to attend their General Assemblies called the World Congress of Gynecology and
Obstetrics (held ever 4 years by over 10 000 participants) . FIGO also requested their national member organizations that bring together reproductive health experts to support attendance of at least one medical student in their delegation. While doing this, they are also opening the
posiblity for students to apply abstracts, have posters or present videos. And they are requesting IFMSA's support in the process of organizing time for students to meet and discuss issues relevant to them - during the Congress.

For any questions - please contact
SCORA LO (lra@ifmsa.org) or LO to the WHO (lwho@ifmsa.org)

For more information on the Conference, please visit:

internship to WHO-Geneva
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Dear IFMSA members,

... during the WHO EB 124th Session held last week in WHO Headquarters (Geneva, Switzerland) , several meetings with WHO staff members from a variety of departments were set between IFMSA President (Melhim Bou Alwan) and IFMSA Liaison Officer to the WHO (Silva Rukavina).

Many departments are very interested in having a medical student as an intern for *minimum of 6 and maximum of 12 weeks*, working on a specific issue (see below). These are internships where they themselves would like to assess the candidates and not take randomly assigned interns from the Internship Programme, after which the rest of the protocol is sorted out (motivation and background in the filed of interest is assessed). It is an un-payed internship (no financial support is given for the student), it requires you to be enrolled as a students at your University for the time of the internship duration, and it requires you to have passed 3 years of your studies. Fluency in one of the UN working languages is a requirement.
Student is later on provided with a Recommendation Letter from his/her mentor.

Currently these departments are looking into having an intern in WHO Headquarters in Geneva:

*Child and Adolescent Health and Development *
- topic: Assessment of the Global Fund in addressing child health issues
(mentored by a Medical Officer / HIV - terms of reference - yes)

*Tobacco Free Initiative *
- topic: Essential medicines and tobacco addiction related medication
(mentored by a Technical Officer - terms of reference - not yet)

Both internships would need to start very shortly, thus we need students to apply who do have the time availability and means to support themselves. All those who are interested - please send your CVs (elaborate) with a short Motivational Letter expressing your interest. *Please e mail your applications to lwho@ifmsa.org by February 8th 2009*

In the future, this kind of information will be posted on the IFMSA web site (Externals - WHO - Internships) .

SEAPA opens applications to 2009 Journalism Fellowship Program
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

SEAPA opens applications to 2009 Journalism Fellowship Program

The Southeast Asian Press Alliance is now accepting applications for the 8th SEAPA Journalism Fellowship Program, centered on this year's theme, "The Challenge for Democracy and Human Rights Under the New ASEAN Charter".

Every year since 2002, SEAPA has provided journalists of Southeast Asian nationalities with the opportunity to explore common issues affecting the communities and nations of their region. The Fellowship runs for three weeks in May, inclusive of two three-day workshops, and two weeks to cover in a Southeast Asian country other than that of the Fellows' respective bases.

For the 2009 Fellowship, the Fellowship theme is, "The Challenge for Human Rights Under the New ASEAN Charter".

Journalists interested in taking part in the program are invited to accomplish and submit an application form downloadable from the SEAPA website, along with a story proposal (no more than 1,000 words) in line with the given theme. Applicants must also submit two articles published from 2007 to 2009, an ID picture, curriculum vitae, and certification of employment from their media company. (Freelancers may submit certification from editors of publications where their submitted clips appeared.)

About the theme:
The ASEAN Charter was adopted at the 13th ASEAN Summit in November 2007 and came into force in December with a meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers in Jakarta.

Beyond rules of membership and ASEAN's vision for single free trade area by 2015, the ASEAN Charter affirms that among others, one of ASEAN's purposes is "to strengthen democracy, enhance good governance and the rule of law, and to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms..." The Charter's outline of Principles emphasizes the need for "adherence to the rule of law, good governance, the principles of democracy and constitutional government" as well as for the community's "respect for fundamental freedoms, the promotion and protection of human rights, and the promotion of social justice."

Article 14 of the ASEAN Charter goes as far as to commit that "ASEAN shall establish an ASEAN human rights body."

The mechanisms of such a body, however, have yet to be spelt out and finalized. Indeed, analysts and critics of the Charter stress that the stated principles and purposes relating to human rights and democracy must be weighed against ASEAN's historical emphasis on "non-interference" and on its tradition of moving by consensus.
Given such developments and continuing concerns, the SEAPA Journalism Fellowship 2009 asks: What issues and stories might the region's journalists want/need to highlight or explore to illustrate and discuss continuing challenges for democracy and human rights in Southeast Asia, the new ASEAN Charter considered or notwithstanding?

Story ideas could center on profiling people, communities, policies, events, or issues that can illustrate human rights challenges in the context of the ASEAN Charter.

Journalists interested in applying for this year's Fellowship are invited to submit, along with all requirements, a proposal/essay for a potential investigative feature, centered on a topic to be explored in a Southeast Asian country other than their own.

Over three weeks in May, SEAPA Journalism Fellows will be supported by SEAPA by way of:

• Two round-trip economy air tickets: The first to fly out from the Fellow's Southeast Asian country of origin and back; and the second to allow for coverage in a second SEA country.
• Two three-day seminars with ASEAN officials, and experts and analysts on Southeast Asia and the ASEAN Charter.
• Hotel accommodations and/or housing allowances for the duration of the Fellowship Program.
• Modest but adequate per diem and/or meals for the duration of the Fellowship program.

Output:
Fellows are required to finish a draft of an investigative/news feature article on their chosen topic by the end of the Fellowship program in May. Fellows are also expected to publish their final articles in their home publications within a month of the conclusion of the program.

How to apply:
Interested applicants may submit all forms and documents via email at fellowship@seapa.org . Application forms may be downloaded from the SEAPA website or simply by clicking on the following links:

http://www.seapabkk.org/newdesign/images/SEAPA Fellowship 2009 Application.doc

http://www.seapabkk.org/newdesign/images/SEAPA Fellowship 2009 Application.pdf
Deadline for applications is March 15, 2009.

Dear friends, colleagues, …
MSI (Medical Students’ International) Magazine is published twice

You can look at some previous issues of MSI at:
• MSI
• MSI
• MSI
As I mentioned above, this is the call for articles for the theme
Conflicts in Health. This is our general theme, so we would like you
to write about more concrete topics which we are going to specify in
below paragraph. Why are we doing this a bit differently? The sit and
wait approach did not pay off in the past. This time we will try to
guide our writers to submit articles according to our vision of
Conflicts in Health issue of MSI. This will also ease the writing for
article submitters. At the deadline we hope to be able to publish all
your articles. The themes can be found in the atachment.

What can you submit?
general articles,
research articles,
opinions,
reflections,
photographs,
fictional short stories,
poems,
cartoons
any other form suitable for a printed journal.

Where do you send your articles to?
publications@ ifmsa.org or msi@ifmsa.org at latest at 23:59 on 26th of
January 2009.

The themes/topics
can be found in the attachment and will also be sent in another mail.

Article submitting details
can also be found in the attachment! Please BARE THEM IN MIND when
writing!!

SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE EDITOR!!!
Some topics/areas here are intentionally written in a manner to
stimulate skepticism and rational thinking. If someone takes them as
offensive please accept my apology in advance.
This also goes out to all the writers! Topics are controversial, that
means any statement made should be at least supported by a quote on
which it is based upon or clearly stated that it is your personal
belief.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS MAIL TO YOUR LOCAL SERVERS! WE WANT TO REACH AS
MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE!

Hope you are going to send tons of articles!!!

Yours,
